Full Steam Ahead
Design real steam locomotives. Watch the physics decide if they work for their task.
Full Steam Ahead is a browser-based engineering simulator in which you build steam locomotives from the ground up — not by clicking presets, but by making real engineering decisions. Every component you configure affects the physics simulation directly. There are no abstracted stats or arbitrary skill trees. If you want more tractive effort, add coupled axles. If you want higher speeds, increase the driving wheel diameter. If your locomotive can't take curves, you probably gave it five coupled axles and no Gölsdorf lateral-displacement system. The physics will tell you.
GAMEPLAY
Take on a railway contract: a colliery needs a locomotive to haul 200 tonnes of coal on flat track; a mountain railway needs something that can handle a 2.5% gradient and 200m curve radii; a national railway is tendering for a 90 km/h express engine. Read the contract, design a locomotive to match, and submit it. Bonuses are paid for low fuel consumption or exceeding the speed requirement.
Once your design meets the contract requirements, launch the simulation. Watch your locomotive accelerate out of the station — throttle open, cutoff set, fire glowing — and manage the regulator, the feed injector and the firebox all the way to the destination. Every control does exactly what it would on a real engine.
Then spend your earnings on the research tree — from Stephenson valve gear and flat slide valves all the way to Kylchap blast pipes and superheaters — and take on more demanding contracts, until you can build a locomotive capable of hauling 2000 tonnes of coal over the Rocky Mountains.
WHY STEAM LOCOMOTIVES?
There is something deeply satisfying about a machine that turns fire and water into motion. No hidden abstraction, no magic — just steam pressure pushing a piston, a connecting rod turning a wheel, and physics doing the rest. Superheating. Compound expansion. Blast pipes that draw their own draught. The more you understand how it all fits together, the more remarkable it becomes.
Full Steam Ahead lets you explore that world at your own pace. Why did the Pacific wheel arrangement become the global express standard? Why was compound expansion common in France but rare in Britain? Why do articulated locomotives dominate the heaviest mountain freight? Design the locomotives, run the contracts, and the answers emerge naturally — in numbers, in physics, in runs won or failed.
Every component and technology comes with an in-game history text explaining the engineering context and real-world examples. Prior knowledge is not required.
FOR WHOM
Full Steam Ahead is for players who want to understand steam locomotives, not just collect them. If you have ever stood beside a working steam engine and wondered what is actually happening inside — this game will show you.
A fair warning: the game is a little dense at first. There are a lot of sliders and a lot of parameters, and it is not immediately obvious what they all do. That is intentional to a degree — this is meant to be a game about understanding, not about clicking through menus until a number turns green. But the tooltips and the in-game help texts are there for a reason. If something is unclear, read the small print. It usually explains both the engineering and the game mechanic.
TECHNICAL
Runs right here in the browser. No download, no installation, no account. Save files are stored locally and can be loaded again. Click "Run game" and start steaming.
If you enjoy Full Steam Ahead, a rating will help a lot — and if there is something that could be improved, or something you really enjoyed, please post it in the comments. Every bit of feedback helps shape the next version.
